Advice to Future Students

Dear Future Students of ED 307,
Before taking this class I want you to keep an open mind. This course is filled with topics that will be truly helpful in the field of education. Though this only benefits you if you keep your mind open into incorporating them into the classroom.
Face it here is what you think of technology:
and your uses of these technologies are far from educational. In this class you are able to learn how to use these, well maybe not Facebook to better your teachings. You will also learn how to be ethical in your teachings.
In the class my favorite piece was skyping with the eighth graders and learning what different types of technologies they actually use in their classroom. This makes the class realistic and opens you eyes to the point of the class. The world is evolving, our students are going to know about technology before us and they are going to be able to use it before us. One item I found really fascinating that the students used was blabberize:
'
I wish that I had known how much students really do use technology in classrooms before taking this course the first time, it makes you take the class more seriously.

I'm a 90's kid

image
I grew up in the 90's, obviously because I am only 20 years old. The sad part about being a 90's kid is no one understands anything from the 90's unless you are a 90's kid. I remember TV that didn't involve teen pregnancy, a life before cell phones, what a land line is, that Kal loves his orange soda and Myspace was my Facebook.
As a 90's kid I remember when TV used to be decent. We had Boy Meets World, All That, The Amanda Show, Rugrats(NOT RUGRATS ALL GROWN UP), Lizzy McGuire, I mean come on where did all these good shows go! We even had better music not this Justin Beiber kid, I mean who didn't love NYSNC or Backstreet Boys.

Current Event- Flipped Classrooms

In the following news article it talks about a 24 year-old teacher who has created a classroom that gets students to use the technology that they have to help them with their education  When students come into the classroom they use their smartphones to scan a code that sends them directly to their assignments for the day.
As an new teacher these are ideas that I could keep in mind to help my students incorporate their technology as opposed to keeping them off from their technology.  Many teachers are afraid to use this approach because they are unsure of technology and think it may hinder the teacher lecturing to students. Though from the courses we are taking now we learn that this is not an effective approach, lecturing, anyway and that educational approaches need to be mixed.
This is important to know because it makes us aware of one teachers approach and educates us on what may work in our own classrooms.

10 Things

Having to depict my 10 favorite things is pretty difficult. There are many things that I enjoy but coming up with my 10 most favorite to share is not as easy as I thought it might be. However here they are:
#1- Post-Its - Simply because there is nothing better than a good post-it. They come in different colors, shapes, designs and sizes.  I have a little collection of my own actually.

#2- Organization- So its not the funnest thing to think of but I find organizing very soothing and very fun. I'm   a little organization freak, makes working retail a bad idea.

#3- Colored Markers/ Pens- Writing in black and blue is not on any of my lists ( and i'm a list maker with my post-its). I feel that writing in color makes everything a little more enjoyable.

#4- Books- I love to read. Its a new found passion of mine. Reading in grade school was always to strict and I never did well with reading what I was assigned. However with my #5 favorite thing, my kindle, reading has become enjoyable again. My #6, watching movies, is also quite easy with my kindle HD.

#7- Kitchen Aid- I am a baker, #8 baking, and with my wonderful Kitchen Aid that is constantly being used life is good.

#9- Music- Everything is done with music in my house. My family is all very into music and its one thing we all have in common.

#10- The HGTV channel- I am obssessed with redesign and everything DIY with houses. My favorite show is Love It or List It, its addicting.

Video in the Classroom

Video can be used within the classroom in various ways. It can be a tool to get different students to interact, it can be a tool to teach, and it can be a tool used in various ways. When I was going to school, prior to college, we did not use video in classrooms other than watching a movie or a video. Through this course I have been taught or discovered new ways to bring in video.

One of these ways to bring in video is our 'How To' project that we are working on ourselves. This could be a way for students to alternatively create a way to explain how to do an activity without writing it down or creating the same old power point. Its a way to get students creating new ideas that are unique and original. This is a unique way to assign a project to a group of students however not all students will have what it takes to create this video and some may not be comfortable making this video. An example of a how to video one way:

Video via Youtube How to Tie Shoes

Teachers can also use video to assign homework or to give instructions. This is a unique way for teachers to get the information out there at the ease of themselves. It is one way that the teacher won't have to repeat what the assignment is again and again. This is also helpful for absent students because they can watch the video when they get back or from home. We also use video in college when we have students from other schools taking the same courses, we do this through a similar fashion to skype.

Northern Lights College Remote Classroom

In today's classrooms there are many ways that we can bring video into our classroom's in ways that benefit ourselves and our students. Today's classrooms are beginning to embrace technology and one of these ways is by bringing in video, in a better sense then watching a movie, that's not the best use of technology.

5 Things

If there were five things anyone should know about me they are a really simple five things. I'll start with the most obvious one I am a very family orientated person. Coming from a large and crazy family I find that family is one of the most important things in life and they come first in my life especially my two nephews.
This is a photo of the ladies in the family, a few years back but still shows how we are. :)

Second fun fact about me is I am a surprisingly good cook and baker. Which comes in handy because I really enjoy eating food. As a professor of mine once said "There are foodies and there are non-foodies." I am a foodie!

This is some yum pesto chicken with fresh tomato and mozzarella made it myself.

Third fun fact that one must know about me is I am a little obsessive compulsive when it comes to my organization. In my world everything has its place and I am very adamant about these places being just right. Which leads to my fourth fun fact and that is that I am a control freak. I feel that the first step is admitting it and I do admit I like to have things go my way.
My last and final fun fact is that music is my escape. There is nothing that can't be solved with a little music, it can even calm my obsessiveness. :) The current song stuck in my head just happens to be the following, thanks to works soundtrack.

I feel that these five facts are important to know because theses are all me, these make me who I am. I find that these are the most important facts because these are what define my everyday. Hope you enjoyed learning a little about me!

Skyping With the 8th Grade

As part of class we were able to Skype with eighth graders today and see the set up of their classroom and how they use technology in their classes. From this experience I was surprised to see how much these students use technology in their courses. They were even using sites and tools that we have not been introduced too. The tools they used were voicethread, pixton, edmodo, blabberize, prezi and google drive.
I feel that this was a valuable use of class time and that it was very useful for us as future teachers. From the tools that they described to us I am very interested in finding out more on blabberize and edmodo. I feel that edmodo would work well with a lot of classes we take at Husson.

Teachers and Social Media

With our world being more and more technological we find ourselves using more and more social media. Almost all of us have a Facebook or Twitter or another form of social media. The line between what is private and what is personal has become quite thin when it comes to what we share on our social media. However when we become teachers what we post onto our social media we must remember that it is not private. What we post can be seen by our students, by the parents, by our peers and by our bosses. What we post can be taken in any way, some may not agree with an opinion that we have given, by a picture that we have posted and take offense. There have been instances in the past where teachers have lost their jobs due to a comment they posted or buy a picture they had uploaded.

After reading the article written by Nancy Soloman on Friendly Advice For Teachers: Beware of Facebook, I find it interesting that there are so many teachers getting knocked on what they are posting onto their social media. I am even more dumbfounded by what it is these teachers are posting onto their Facebook, especially since I know some student-teachers now who should better monitor their posting. After reading this article I am thinking twice on having a Facebook of my own, the whole idea seems to make for more trouble then it is worth.
After reading the article Teachers and Facebook: "Don't do it!"written by Maureen Downey, I am fascinated at the fact that many teachers feel as though it has been an invasion of their privacy by not being allowed to have a Facebook. In a school system in Georgia teachers have been recommended to take down their Facebook's because of postings and pictures. I agree with both sides of this story. Yes, it is a better idea to avoid having Facebook's in the school system to avoid any trouble with postings whether it be a writing or a picture. As individuals it does seem unfair that we as teachers are looked upon so strongly and are unable to post personal things on Facebook but we have to think about how we are perceived. As teachers we are to be role models to our students and we are to represent our schools.

As a personal policy I do not post anything on Facebook that is questionable. As my Facebook is now I would have no problem showing it to my future employers or my current employers. After further studying on this I have found that it is better practice to keep from complaining about my job, students or my personal life. I am going to practice only posting positive things that relate to my personal life and leaving my job off my Facebook. I might even find that when I do teach I will get rid of my Facebook altogether.

Four Favorite Blogs!

My first favorite and recommendation is clutterfreeclassroom. For all of you organization obsessed like myself this blog is a must. Every weekday morning she posts a new idea on how to organize the little things around your classroom, in innovative cheap ways. My favorite is the following blog, diy-seating-with-storage, because I have had the same idea to use in my own future classroom. Only with egg crates and cushions. I am all about making the classroom neat yet functional and this blogger is right up my ally with her doable ideas, I believe many of my future teacher friends would agree. Also it is a good blog because she posts frequently and the blog is easy to read through.

My second recommendation would be lifeinfirstgrade1. This blogger/teacher gives out so many great activity/lesson ideas that are actually usable within the classroom. Her blog is clean, easy to read and if you plan on teaching the first grade you can learn a lot from her or some of her recommended first grade blogs. When we went over what it means to be a good blog just a few weeks ago some of the major items that we pointed out were; do they post frequently (and yes she does), is it easy to follow(and yes it is), is the blog relevant to its title (yes it is) and my own thing is does it give you recommendations to other blogs. She has all of these qualifications plus I enjoy her sense of humor that you pick up on as you read. My blog of choice to sell you on this blogger is classroom-decorating-day-nine, my reasoning is simple. I love the bees, its actually a theme I want to do in my own classroom, and I love how she has everything organized (on her day off I mind you!).

My third  blog is creatingandteaching, this blog is filled with ideas of items to create for your classroom. This blog however is aimed towards younger students, in particular pre-k or maybe kindergarten. Her students are ages 3 and 4 but have autism. I love that her blog is something different. Often times you will see blogs on simply teaching a kindergarten class or first grade and so on but  hers is the first that I have stumbled upon that focuses on how she teaches her young students with autism. I feel like this is simply just a good blog to take a peek at whether you are educating those students or not because it has some really interesting ideas. One that really caught my eye was her dental-health-mini-unit, never have I seen a unit on dental health and this looked like a cute fun way to teach it to the younger students.

My fourth and final, since I already had three and stumbled across this last one, is seusstastic. This is a favorite simply because I am obsessed with Dr. Suess and he will be a part of my classroom! This blog is written by another Suess obsessed or as she calls herself, obsuessed. Her blog is right up my ally, I love all of the Dr.Suess ideas that she has, its sad Dr. Suess week only comes around once a year she has so many ideas. My favorite blog of hers is a week full of Dr. Suess activites of course, seusstastic-seuss-week-freebies, and they are free. Nothing beats a good free idea. Better yet, she has a direct link to her Teachers Notebook shop, includes videos and unit ideas. Love it!
Heres her link: teachersnotebook
*As a small side note I just wanted you to know that all these blogs I found from Pinterest because I am forever looking at teaching ideas and so forth from Pinterst. My addiction has really come in handy because I follow so many education blogs!

IPad's in the Classroom

Before taking into account all of the different ways an iPad can help a child within a classroom I assumed it didn't belong in the classroom. After doing a little research and watching my nephews with kindles and iPod's I believe that these technological tools can be really helpful to children. Technology can be really helpful for all students but especially students who have special needs. The advantage of an iPad is that it is large enough for students to handle, being about the size of a piece of paper, and it can hold a multiple of applications to aid in the learning process.

One example of this assisting a student is a child with down syndrome, from the article Special Ed. Pupils Find Learning Tool in iPad Applications. In this article written by Nirvi Shah, the child has difficulty communicating with others. This communication barrier makes it difficult for her to communicate with her peers and her teachers, without communication they have a barrier between them and are unable to connect. With the app Proloquo2Go she is able to select pictures to communicate with peers.
Another example is a test that was done with high school students with special needs in the article written by James Basham. These students were first given a math test on paper and then that same test on the iPad. It was discovered that when the students completed the problems on the iPad they finished more questions in less time because they were more engaged. My take on this would be that because a paper test is very frustrating and just the sight of the paper test can give a student anxiety. By giving the child the iPad to complete the problems that anxiety is taken away, an iPad is looked at as fun and games. This is actually a plus in the education setting because you are getting real results from students with the test anxiety.
Finally, the apps that can be accessed on the iPad are simple to find and easy to access. If a school has a bunch of iPads logged onto one account they all can have the same applications so that all students can access these tools. Accessibility and expense is important. In younger schools it is important to have a tool that is easily accessed by a student on their own but is not expensive to purchase. Another plus with the applications is they are constantly being updated. New apps come out all the time that these students can use as they grow. In the long run this is much less expensive then the tools that are bought to suit the needs of various students. For example a student who is hard of hearing or a student who has trouble with sight. On this one tool you can access text to speech or expand the lettering so that it is easier to read. This is found on one tool where as it would take two separate tools to help these students. Some schools have debated whether this is an option that they should be thinking hard about and bringing into their classrooms according to the article written by John Waters.

In  my own experience with my nephews I find that iPod's and kindles are a great addition in our house. My nephew at two has already mastered electronic puzzles and is working on matching games. His favorite are the Amazing Shape Puzzles on the iPod. With this puzzle he has to put together the pieces and in the end it has the name of the puzzle and it reads the name. For example when he puts together an eagle, he finishes the puzzle and then a little guy comes onto the screen with a chalkboard that reads eagle and he reads the word aloud. This has taught my nephew many different animals, letters, colors and he even likes putting together continents. These are not only very educational games but peace keepers. I am now a believer that an iPad could be a great addition to my classroom.

Twitter Follows:
teachingwthsoul: I choose to follow teachingwthsoul because she references to many different areas that might appeal to teachers. She tweets often and from a quick skim through you can see that they are about education. She has a lot of information or references to using technology in education.

mbteach: I choose to follow mbteach because she gives out a lot of information in her tweets about technology in the classroom. She brings it to reality, she is also very willing to answer questions that other educators or parents may have about this technology.

Review: Kindle Fire HD

(Photo taken from Creative Commons)
For months I had been contemplating which piece of technology I had been wanting to purchase. The battle was kindle vs. Ipad. I wanted something small enough that I could carry around with me (I already have a netbook and hate it, wouldn't advise anyone ever getting it) and a piece of technology that could help me in the classroom as both student and teacher. The ultimate thing for me was price though, being a college student putting $500 into something wasn't really appealing to me or my bank account. In the end my decision was made for me by my boyfriend who bought me a Kindle fire HD for Christmas (completely oblivious to the fact that I even wanted one).

I am thrilled with my Kindle. There are so many ways I use it and trust me the money was not wasted. The first night I received it I bought more apps than I thought my Kindle could handle. Among the apps I bought one for handwriting/ note taking which come in handy when wanting to write just little notes or a whole lectures notes in class. I also have puzzle apps for my older nephew, who steals my kindle whenever it is in eyesight, hes two. One of my most used apps would have to be watching videos on either the Amazon site or through Netflix(the resolution is amazing and it rarely ever skips, skipping only happens if more than one person is watching Netflix and that's a Netflix issue not Kindle). The speed of the Kindle is excellent(thought at times you do have to clean it out or it will slow down like any device). I can go onto the internet to look something up or download an app and I get there almost instantly, which for being as impatient as I am its quite nice.
(Taken from Creative Commons with permission from author)
For myself I feel that the kindle is quite user friendly, that is just my opinion though others may find that it can be quite complicated. Most any problem that occurs, lately its just been getting onto internet sources, have been solved quite simply. Anything that needs to be accessed can be found right on the main menu. Some may prefer the Ipad to the Kindle, for them they may choose this because it is a larger version and there are many other apps that they prefer off the Ipad. I'll be honest I like them both. They each do a lot of the same things. For me though I am a reader. I love that I can borrow books from Amazon to read for free or download a book to keep right onto my Kindle and if I have other Kindles I can access them on my account. On the Ipad you can only read it on that Ipad I can't read it on my Ipod or transfer it to another Ipod. That is really why I prefer my Kindle because what if I want to give my mom a book I just read and thought she'd really enjoy it, I'm not going to make her pay for that same book I just bought. Hope you found this review helpful and might even consider the Kindle Fire HD.

Just to show a little comparison:
